Mission 1

At Luba Heritages Connect, our mission is to unite and preserve the rich, diverse heritage of the Luba people, connecting fragmented and dispersed Luba cultural heritages and heritage cultures across the Western worlds and fostering active community contributions from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Angola, and their vibrant diasporas.

Through the power of digital innovation, we aim to create a dynamic platform that bridges generations and geographies, ensuring that the traditions, stories, arts, and customs of the Luba people are safeguarded and shared with the world. By empowering both local and global Luba communities, we offer a space where cultural exchange, knowledge sharing, and collaboration thrive, creating a living archive that reflects the strength and resilience of the Luba identity.

Our goal is to build a thriving ecosystem of creators, educators, youth, and elders, all working together to celebrate, preserve, and reinvigorate Luba culture for future generations. Whether through digital archiving, creative collaborations, or educational resources, Luba Heritages Connect is committed to fostering a sustainable community where contributions from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, and Angola, and their diasporas come together to preserve and share the heart of Luba heritages and traditions with the worlds.

Why we do this?

This initiative aims to bridge the gap between past and present by utilizing innovative digital tools, such as virtual exhibitions, 3D reconstructions, and interactive platforms, to provide equitable and decolonial access to Luba heritage and traditions, thereby challenging dominant narratives and centering historically marginalized voices.

This project represents a commitment to preserving these vital narratives through a community-based approach that centers female legacies and lived memories, ensuring they are not only remembered but actively integrated into the ongoing reimagining of heritage, identity, and historical consciousness. It seeks to bridge the gap between GLAM institutions and local communities through academic mediation that foregrounds postcolonial and gendered agency.

Through this initiative, we seek to foreground the contributions and experiences of women historically excluded from dominant heritage discourses, thereby fostering a more inclusive, intersectional, and decolonial understanding of Luba heritages and their contemporary relevance.

Through digital storytelling, this project provides a platform for women to reclaim and share their histories, making their voices visible within global heritage discourses and ensuring their contributions are remembered across generations. By shifting the focus from static archival representation to lived experience, the project challenges dominant historiographies and centers embodied, community-based knowledge.

Because within Luba cultures and traditions, women’s stories, experiences, and contributions have often been overlooked, marginalized, or erased, this initiative seeks to recover and amplify these voices. In doing so, it contributes to a more inclusive and decolonial reconstruction of heritage narratives—ones that recognize the central role of women in shaping polity, collective memory, and processes of social and cultural change.

By centering the voices of women, this project highlights their vital role in shaping the community, encompassing family traditions, artistic expressions, and leadership, as well as their tangible participation in shaping policies and actions within communities that transcend territorially inherited sovereignties, ensuring their contributions are recognized and remembered across generations.

Invitation to Contribute

In the face of ongoing challenges, including the crisis and mobility issues in the DRC, we invite individuals from all backgrounds, community members, artists, scholars, museums, galleries, and digital creatives, to join us online in preserving and sharing the untold stories of Luba cultural heritages. This project is fully digital, and all submissions and contributions can be made online, allowing for participation from anywhere in the world. Your contributions, whether in the form of stories, photos, research, maps, expertise, or innovative digital works, will play a key role in bringing our collective histories to life. The outcomes of your contributions will center on digital and 3D creative projects, including virtual exhibitions, interactive displays, and digital reconstructions of heritage cultures. Your contributions will play a vital role in presenting Luba heritages and traditions in immersive, engaging ways that are accessible to a global audience.

Ways to Get Involved:

Share your personal and family stories, as well as your unique experiences, through online submissions. Contribute historical photos, maps, or material that highlight Luba cultures and heritage, and offer scholarly insights or research via digital platforms. You can also collaborate on digital and 3D creative projects, such as virtual exhibitions or interactive 3D models, to showcase and protect these traditions. Help us create online exhibitions that celebrate and preserve Luba heritage for future generations.
